Memories at Advent
Stories and arts have a long tradition in shedding light on diseases. An Advent calendar composed of stories and experiences of dementia contains 24 tips on books, films and documentaries that delve into the world of memory and dementia.
Memory disorders or dementia affect nearly all of us, personally or in our roles as a family member, friend, neighbour, colleague or professional. Each person is unique and experiences dementia in their own way, but sharing experiences, even when these are challenging, can provide support, guidance, and hope.
The Department of Neurosciences at the University of Helsinki and the Geriatric Outpatient Clinic of the City of Helsinki collaborated to create a Finnish-language Advent calendar with the theme of memory and dementia, aimed at increasing awareness and our understanding of these conditions.
What started out as an Advent calendar is now a website with a collection of stories on dementia. Blog posts can be found permanently at the same address and the English translations are now available as downloadable PDF versions: Memories at Advent 2022

In addition, libraries and reading circles may use this site to search for books or movies on dementia. Memories at Advent website can also be used for the education of social and health professionals. A different approach can broaden the perspective on dementia, even for experienced professionals.
